5 Minute Interview with Eleanor Goymer

Eleanor is Head of Rights at HarperCollins with responsibility for the HarperFiction, Avon and HQ divisions.  With over a decade of experience in publishing, Eleanor has sold serial rights for politicians and sports stars, handled the translation tie in programmes for movie franchises such as The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Fantastic Beasts and looks after the worldwide rights for The Tolkien Estate.  She also sells rights across all fiction titles to the US and major European markets and co-ordinates the translation publishing for UK fiction through the global HarperCollins offices.

What was the last book you read?
The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman.

How did you buy it?
It was a Christmas present, one of the only things I asked for!

And what did you read it on?
My sofa, whilst ignoring my children.

What’s next on your reading list?
Autumn by Karl Ove Knausgaard.

Tell us what you do in 20 words
I sell rights in HarperCollins titles to US and foreign publishers.  I’m good at speed reading, negotiations and brevity.

What do you like about your job?
Reading books, discovering new voices, meeting new people from all around the world.

What is your favourite bookshop and why?
Waterstones Piccadilly, I have lost entire days in that shop and bankrupt myself every year buying Christmas presents (mainly for myself).

What would be the title of your autobiography?
It’s Not Rocket Science.

What do you love about the London Book Fair?
Meeting old friends, making new ones and finding out something new and surprising about a market each year.

What is the one essential item you bring to the Fair?
My sense of humour.
