The London Book Fair announces Waterstones Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman as Children’s Author of the Day

NEWS FOR RELEASE, LONDON, 5 December 2013: The London Book Fair (LBF) is delighted to announce Malorie Blackman will be Children’s Author of the Day on Thursday 10 April 2014. The Author of the Day programme showcases one author across each of the three days of the Fair in a schedule that includes events, book signings, photo calls and meetings with international publishing contacts. Malorie’s attendance at the 2014 Fair will be the first time a Children’s Laureate has taken part in the Author of the Day programme.

Malorie, who is the Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2013–15, has written over fifty books and is acknowledged as one of today’s most imaginative and convincing writers for young readers. Her books have been published in over 20 languages and she has had over 35 foreign publishers. Malorie has been awarded numerous prizes for her work, including the Red House Children’s Book Award and the Fantastic Fiction Award, and she has also been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. In 2005, she was honoured with the Eleanor Farjeon Award in recognition of her contribution to children’s books, and in June 2013 she won the Prix des Incorruptible in France for Boys Don’t Cry. In 2008, Malorie received an OBE for her services to children’s literature.

Malorie Blackman said: “I am thrilled and honoured to be one of the Authors of the Day at The London Book Fair. As someone who has attended LBF for close to two decades, I’ve always found it to be informative, educational and welcoming. For all of us who love books, in whatever shape or form, these are interesting times. And what better place to discuss the past, present and future of books than LBF.”

Jacks Thomas, Director, The London Book Fair said: “Our delight at being able to welcome Malorie as our Children’s Author of the Day is informed by several things – she is a brilliant and inspiring writer who is a truly global brand, connecting kids all over the world through her work; to have a current Children’s Laureate is very exciting; and to name Malorie as a key part of our 2014 line-up a great honour. On a personal note, I cannot wait to meet the writer who inspired my daughter to read avidly and to think about significant issues during her formative years while in the grip of exciting stories.”

Malorie Blackman’s LBF schedule will include an ‘in conversation’ event in the PEN Literary Salon followed by a book signing.
