Clarivate releases latest Journal Citation Reports, announces Caltech deal
Clarivate Analytics has released the latest update to its Journal Citation Reports. Covering 11,655 journals across 234 disciplines and 80 countries, these now include more article-level data and a new journal profile page providing a contextual narrative for Journal Impact Factors. Several publishers, including Wiley and Emerald, have announced their best results ever, and impact factors overall have increased by an average of 10%. Clarivate’s analysis has however also uncovered what it describes as a ‘problematic pattern of citations’ amongst a small number of journals which it is investigating further.
Clarivate has also announced a collaboration with the American research university Caltech to provide its researchers with single-click access to millions of academic papers and journal articles via Kopernio, the AI-technology start-up it acquired earlier this year.
Springer launches new hybrid journals and report on hybrid journal impact
Springer Nature has launched two new hybrid journals under a new imprint, SN. SN Applied Sciences and SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine will open for submissions this month and will focus particularly on the work of authors from emerging regions. Earlier this month, Springer published a report, Assessing the open access effect for hybrid journals, suggesting that open access articles in hybrid journals attract more downloads, citations, and attention than their non-OA equivalents. Analysis by Digital Science of more than 70,000 articles published in Springer Nature’s own hybrid journals demonstrated that the OA articles received 1.6 times as many citations and 1.9 times as many news mentions as non-OA articles; they were downloaded by users at academic institutions 1.6 times as often, and four times as often by users overall.
New tool from Publons

Publons Reviewer Connect combines the company’s cross-publisher platform of more than 400,000 reviewers with Clarivate Analytics’ author and citation database Web of Science, using AI to generate recommendations drawn from more than seven million authors. Clarivate CEO for Scientific and Academic Research Annette Thomas suggests that the tool will help editors build ‘more relevant, inclusive and diverse reviewer pools’.
