Five Minute Interview with BookBaby – an exhibitor exclusive

BookBaby joined The London Book Fair as an exhibitor for the first time in 2017 and are returning for their 2nd year at LBF18. We asked Stephen Spatz, president of BookBaby, all about his experience as a First Time Exhibitor and for any handy tips/tricks he had for our ‘new for 2018’ exhibitors.

BookBaby is the world’s leading self publishing services provider. From world class editing and cover design, book production and printing, eBook conversions, and global distribution including the biggest Print On Demand network in the industry – BookBaby is the most complete one-stop-shopping destination for indie authors.

Why did you decide to exhibit at The London Book Fair?

We’ve always known that a good percentage of our self published authors come from outside the United States. When we found out that the UK and the rest of Europe constituted over 60% of this business it was an easy decision to make.

What was the best thing about being at LBF?

LBF seems to be a true melting pot for today’s publishing business. I met a wide range of people during last year’s LBF, from top executives at traditional publishing houses to first time authors who used LBF to learn more about the industry. It was a much a learning and listening experience for me as well as an opportunity to introduce BookBaby to a wider global audiences.

As a new exhibitor to LBF in 2017, what are your top 3 tips for anyone who is new in 2018?

1.       Book appointments early and commit to meetings.

2.       Allocate plenty of time to explore other booths and stands

3.       Wear comfortable shoes!

What advice would you give to new exhibitors for 2018?

Make sure you bring plenty of literature. I almost ran out of handouts on my last day in 2017 and I’ll make sure I’m better prepared this year!

What three essential items do you advise all new exhibitors have at the show?

1.       Bottled water – you’re going to need it to keep  hydrated

2.       A map of the Olympia hall – it can be confusing

3.       A charger for your cell phone just in case.

What do you suggest a new exhibitor do as a priority on arrival on Tuesday morning?

Get a lay of the land. Walk as much of the show as you can to get a feeling for the other exhibitors. Mark down stands you want to make sure you see before the show concludes.

What was the one thing you wished someone had told you before you arrived?

Bring a French or German speaking rep to the show! This year I’m equipped with an app on my phone that will help with translations.

What are you most looking forward to for LBF 2018?

We think self publishing is on the rise in the UK and Europe and BookBaby is ready and able to work with customers from around the globe.
