INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING INDUSTRY EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2014 – Call for Submissions

NEWS FOR RELEASE, LONDON, 29 January 2014:

The London Book Fair (LBF), in association with The UK Publishers Association (The PA), is delighted to announce that submissions and nominations are now open for the International Publishing Industry Excellence Awards 2014. Entries for the awards need to be registered online via the LBF website by 22 February 2014.

These brand new international awards for the book industry will consist of 15 categories. They represent the UK’s recognition of international publishing industry excellence and have been designed to celebrate achievement across the whole business of publishing.

Nominations and submissions are sought for each category for international companies, organisations and individuals. In addition, UK companies, organisations and individuals may also be nominated / submit themselves for awards indicated by (*) below. Nominations and submissions may come from anyone, either based in the UK, or overseas. LBF and The PA have selected an authority of UK judges working at the heart of each category, whose international or discipline-specific expertise qualifies them to judge their peers’ work. The award categories are:

The shortlist will be announced in March. The International Publishing Industry Excellence Awards winners will be presented at an invitation-only evening event on Tuesday 8 April 2014, 18.30 in The Conference Centre, Earls Court, London.

2) British Council International Digital Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year Award Criteria: This award, which is part of the British Council Young Creative Entrepreneurs Programme, identifies innovative and exciting entrepreneurs – the “ones to watch” – in the creative sectors around the world Who is eligible: New players in digital publishing who have been in business 2-7 years. This award is being run by British Council offices in China, Egypt, Malaysia, South Africa, Columbia, Brazil, Russia and Spain and is only open to residents of those countries

3) The Publishers Association Copyright Protection Award Criteria: Open to companies or individuals who have worked consistently to protect UK and international copyright in one or more overseas markets. Who is eligible: Any company or organisation operating outside the UK, whose scope of achievement is outside the UK

4) The International Academic and Professional Publisher Award Criteria: This award is for international companies or individuals who have significantly enhanced users’ learning and information acquisition experience, in an evolving marketplace Who is eligible: Any company or organisation outside the UK whose scope of achievement is outside the UK

5) The International Education Initiatives Award Criteria: International organisations which promote literacy, numeracy and wider access to education Who is eligible: Any company or organisation operating outside the UK, whose scope of achievement is outside the UK

6) The International Educational Learning Resources Award Criteria: International companies which have produced innovative and exciting new learning resources that enhance and broaden the learning experience, whether in schools, home, play schemes, or clubs Who is eligible: Any company or organisation operating outside the UK, whose scope of achievement is outside the UK …/

7) The Bookseller International Adult Trade Publisher Award Criteria: International publishers who have demonstrated innovation in a title or series, in any format, whose publication has created significant impact, resulting in critical acclaim, high sales, and PR coverage, or have demonstrated a new business model or business innovation Who is eligible: Any company or organisation operating outside the UK, whose scope of achievement is outside the UK

8) The International Trade Children’s and Young Adult Publisher Award Criteria: This award is for international children’s publishers who have demonstrated innovation in a title or series, in any format, whose publication has created significant impact, resulting in critical acclaim, high sales, and PR coverage, or have demonstrated a new business model or business innovation. Who is eligible: Any company or organisation operating outside the UK, whose scope of achievement is outside the UK

9) The Publishing for Digital Minds Innovation Award (*) Criteria: For companies who have demonstrated innovation in any aspect of their business, from products and platforms through to systems and delivery. The award is run in association with The Technology Strategy Board Who is eligible: This award is open to all members of the publishing industry, from UK and overseas. The shortlisted entrants will be invited to present in a quick-fire session at The Publishing for Digital Minds Conference, 7 April 2014

10) International Literary Translation Initiative Award Criteria: This award is open to organisations that have succeeded in raising the profile of literature in translation, promoting literary translators, and encouraging new translators and translated works Who is eligible: Any company or organisation operating outside the UK, whose scope of achievement is outside the UK

11) The International Transformation Award for best use of IP Criteria: For those who have maximised a book’s IP across varied formats and platforms, or those who have imported other formats to create book content Who is eligible: Any company or organisation operating outside the UK, whose scope of achievement is outside the UK …/

12) The International Book Industry Technology Supplier Award Criteria: Companies which have demonstrated consistent success and excellence in technology provision to the publishing industry Who is eligible: Any company or organisation operating outside the UK, whose scope of achievement is outside the UK

13) The International Literary Agent Award (*) Criteria: Agents who have made a significant impact on the sale and translation of non -English-speaking authors Who is eligible: International Literary Agents, or agents based in UK, who work only with non-English-speaking authors

14) The Market Focus Achievement Award (*) Supported by The London Book Fair, The Publishers Association and the British Council Criteria: This award recognises a significant achievement in developing the cultural and/or commercial connections between literature and publishing markets in the Market Focus country and the rest of the world in the period following their Market Focus appearance at The London Book Fair Who is eligible: Individuals, companies or programmes from, or working directly with, Market Focus countries from 2008-2013 (Arab World, India, South Africa, Russia, China and Turkey). 15) Korea Market Focus Award for Outstanding Contribution Supported by The London Book Fair, The Publishers Association and the British Council Criteria: This award recognises an outstanding contribution to developing the cultural and/or commercial connections between the literature and publishing sectors of Korea and the rest of the world Who is eligible: Open to any individual, or individuals, from the UK or overseas except employees or members of partner organisations. Partner organisations for Market Focus Korea 2014 are The London Book Fair, the British Council, The Publishers Association, the Korean Publishers Association and the Literature Translation Institute of Korea.
